Spain’s recently arrived Ámbar Tactical Air Detachment used the training to integrate with Allied forces already operating on NATO’s Eastern Flank. The detachment was activated in Estonia on Aug. 25 with aircraft and personnel from Zaragoza, Spain.
“Our priority is to be ready to assume our operational duties at the earliest opportunity and to provide our Allies with the most effective contribution possible to Baltic Air Defence,” said Spanish Major Antonio Mancebo Marín, commander of the Spanish Air and Space Force’s Ámbar detachment. “Working side by side with our Estonian hosts and Turkish Allies allows us to align our procedures quickly and operate safely and effectively from the very first mission.”
On the ground, Estonian personnel refueled Spanish EF-18Ms, while Estonian firefighters and Spanish medical teams reviewed rescue and emergency response procedures. Coordination briefings also helped the deployed units familiarize themselves with local procedures, improve flight safety and strengthen interoperability.
Spanish EF-18Ms also flew familiarization sorties alongside Turkish F-16s. The flights gave Allied aircrews an opportunity to refine coordination and develop a shared understanding of the operating environment.
NATO said the activity connected flight operations, ground support and emergency response through common procedures. The training is intended to help host-nation and deployed forces integrate quickly, operate safely and respond effectively as part of the Alliance’s defensive posture.
The cooperation supports NATO air defense and strengthens the readiness of forces assigned to defend the Baltic region. NATO said working together from the earliest stages of a deployment improves cohesion, readiness and the ability to protect Allied territory, populations and airspace.
Across NATO’s Eastern Flank, Italian Eurofighters are deployed to Lithuania, while Turkish F-16s are operating in Estonia. Spanish fighters are deployed to both Romania and Estonia as part of NATO’s broader air defense posture.
