United Kingdom: how new land platforms production boosts the local economy

By Defence Industry Europe

The UK Ministry of Defence has unveiled the first fully British-made Boxer armoured vehicle at the International Armoured Vehicle (IAV) Conference in Farnborough. This marks a milestone in the £5 billion investment to equip the British Army with 623 state-of-the-art Boxer vehicles, enhancing national security and boosting the local economy.

The Boxer programme supports 400 jobs in Telford and Stockport, with an additional 1,000 jobs sustained across the UK supply chain. As part of the government’s Plan for Change, it contributes to the Defence Industrial Strategy, aimed at fostering economic growth and strengthening regional prosperity through skilled employment.

Around 75% of the Boxer’s components are sourced domestically, ensuring a resilient UK-based supply chain. While initial production is underway in Germany, manufacturing is transitioning to the UK, further solidifying Britain’s role as a leader in defence innovation.

In addition to the Boxer vehicles, the British Army’s modernisation includes the procurement of 148 Challenger 3 tanks. Together with Ajax armoured vehicles, these platforms are projected to sustain over 6,000 jobs nationwide and enhance the Army’s mobility, adaptability, and combat effectiveness.

Maria Eagle, Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, described the British-made Boxer as a testament to the nation’s growing defence capabilities. She highlighted its role in not only transforming the Army into a more lethal fighting force but also delivering economic benefits through innovation and collaboration.

John Abunassar, CEO of Rheinmetall UK, hailed the milestone as the return of armoured vehicle production to British soil. He emphasised Boxer’s role as a “Future Force Enabler,” helping the Army meet emerging challenges while generating long-term economic gains.

The Defence Industrial Strategy, which is under consultation until February 2025, is set to define the sector’s goals through 2035. It forms part of the wider Government Industrial Strategy, designed to enhance the UK’s resilience and global competitiveness in defence.
