United States approves potential $1 billion AMRAAM air-to-air missile sale to Finland

By Defence Industry Europe

The United States has approved a possible sale of AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM) to Finland, with an estimated value of up to $1.07 billion, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced. The Finnish government has requested the purchase of 405 AIM-120D-3 missiles and eight AIM-120D-3 guidance sections, which will include precise positioning through either the Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module or M-Code.

According to the DSCA, the proposed sale will support U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by strengthening the defence of a NATO ally that contributes to political stability and economic progress in Europe. It will also enhance Finland’s capability to counter current and future threats while improving interoperability with U.S. and allied forces.

Finland already operates AMRAAMs within its armed forces and is expected to integrate the new systems without difficulty, the agency noted. The DSCA added that the sale “will not alter the basic military balance in the region.”

The principal contractor for the programme will be RTX Corporation, based in Arlington, Virginia.
