USMC completes successful live-fire training with Iron Dome air defence system

By Defence Industry Europe

The United States Marine Corps has successfully completed its first live-fire training with a prototype air defence system that integrates the Iron Dome interceptor. This system combines an American radar and command-and-control centre with the Tamir interceptor and a mobile launcher, developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems in partnership with Raytheon as the primary contractor.

During the exercise, the Marines operated the entire system independently, achieving successful target interceptions. The training also tested the continuous launch capability of the Iron Dome interceptors from a mobile launcher, designed specifically for Marine use, as part of a broader plan to evaluate a medium-range intercept capability (MRIC).

The rigorous training programme and extensive testing provided the Marines with proficiency in the operation of the mobile launcher and interceptor, confirming its effectiveness in various challenging scenarios. The Tamir interceptor, part of the Iron Dome system, is capable of intercepting diverse threats, including cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and various rockets, artillery shells, and mortars.

Developed by Rafael and adapted to Marine specifications with support from Raytheon, the system marks a critical step towards its operational deployment. This achievement is a key milestone in the Marine Corps’ programme to assess the prototype’s deployment, enhancing medium-range air defence capabilities.

The Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO), under Israel’s Directorate of Defense Research & Development, leads the development of the country’s multi-layered defence system, which includes the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow 2 and 3 weapon systems. The success of this training underscores the ongoing collaboration between Israel and the United States in advancing air defence technologies for modern military applications.
