The United States Navy has awarded its 2024 Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund Award to the first-in-class aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), currently deployed in the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel departed Naval Station Norfolk earlier this month for a scheduled deployment.

The annual award is presented by the Chief of Naval Operations to one ship in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets for outstanding performance in the Navy’s battle efficiency competition. It includes a financial stipend designated for the crew’s Morale, Wellness, and Recreation programmes.

“The Sailors aboard USS Gerald R. Ford represent the best of our nation’s highly trained warriors,” said Captain David Skarosi, the ship’s commanding officer. “I’m thankful every day for the privilege of leading such an inspirational crew, and I’m proud of their hard work and dedication that is so deserving of this award.”

In the past two years, Gerald R. Ford has earned a series of commendations, including two Battle “E” Efficiency awards and two Chief of Naval Operations Aviation “S” Safety awards. The carrier also received the 2023 Rear Admiral (Upper Half) James “Jig Dog” Ramage Award in coordination with embarked Carrier Air Wing 8, as well as the 2023 Battenberg Cup for best overall ship in the Fleet.

Vice Admiral Michael E. Boyle, Staff Director for the U.S. Navy, praised the winning crews for their “exemplary dedication to battle efficiency and warfighting.” His remarks accompanied the formal announcement of this year’s award.

Established in 1917 by the New York Tribune Association, the Marjorie Sterrett Battleship Fund originated from a letter written by 13-year-old Marjorie Sterrett, who donated her weekly allowance in 1916 to support U.S. naval strength. Originally used to reward exceptional gunnery and torpedo accuracy, the fund now recognises ships that demonstrate operational excellence and readiness.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is assigned to Carrier Strike Group 12, which provides agile and integrated naval power for sustained operations at sea. The group plays a vital role in deterring adversaries, supporting American security, and projecting global strength across multiple domains.
