The deployment expanded the Navy’s ability to operate advanced attack submarines across the Western Pacific. Minnesota participated in Valiant Shield 2026 and visited Okinawa and Sasebo, Japan.
“Minnesota’s return marks a significant milestone for the Pacific Submarine Force and demonstrates the Navy’s ability to sustain and employ advanced Virginia-class capabilities in the Pacific,” said Capt. Christopher Carter, commander of Submarine Squadron 15. “Operating from Guam, this crew demonstrated the readiness, endurance and advanced capabilities the Virginia-class platform brings to the strategic outpost in the Western Pacific.”
The Okinawa visit tested the Navy’s ability to sustain undersea operations from different locations. The deployment also supported homeland defense and strengthened regional alliances and partnerships.
“This homecoming marks the successful completion of Minnesota’s first deployment from Guam,” said Cmdr. Jeffrey Cornielle, the submarine’s commanding officer. “The crew performed superbly while executing missions vital to the defense of the homeland and strengthening our alliances and partnerships.”
Two officers and 20 enlisted sailors earned submarine warfare insignia during the deployment. The qualification requires mastery of submarine systems, watch stations and mission execution.
“The Sailors aboard Minnesota represented the Navy with pride and professionalism, no matter the task,” said Master Chief Electronics Technician (Navigation) Joshua Garrett, the boat’s senior enlisted leader. “Every time a challenge stood before them, they answered the call with discipline, character and an unwavering commitment to one another.”
The homecoming included the Navy’s traditional first kiss and first hug. The honors went to Electronics Technician (Nuclear) 2nd Class Jose Salazar and Yeoman (Submarines) 1st Class Jaccor Blakley.
Minnesota arrived in Guam in November 2024 as the Navy’s first forward-deployed Virginia-class submarine. It has since conducted operations and port visits with regional allies.
The submarine visited HMAS Stirling in Western Australia and Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory. Its crew supported the Submarine Command Course and participated in Exercise Lungfish with the Royal Australian Navy.
Minnesota entered service on September 7, 2013, after commissioning in Norfolk, Virginia. It was the 10th Virginia-class submarine commissioned by the Navy.
The submarine is assigned to Submarine Squadron 15 at Polaris Point in Guam. It is one of four forward-deployed fast-attack submarines stationed on the island.
The Navy uses fast-attack submarines for sustained undersea operations across the Pacific. Their speed, endurance, stealth and mobility support forward presence and combat missions.
