USS Texas submarine completes sea trials following modernisation at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

By Defence Industry Europe,

The Naval Sea Systems Command announced on 19 December that the USS Texas (SSN 775) successfully completed sea trials off the coast of New England. This milestone marks the conclusion of its Depot Modernisation Period (DMP) at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY), returning the attack submarine to the fleet in a fully modernised and battle-ready state.

The Texas Project Team, composed of skilled trade workers, engineers, and material support personnel at PNSY, collaborated with the submarine’s crew to ensure its readiness for deployment. The extensive maintenance and modernisation process aimed to equip the vessel with advanced systems and capabilities to meet current operational demands.

PNSY’s success in delivering the USS Texas demonstrates its ability to innovate beyond traditional workflows, aligning with the Chief of Naval Operations’ goal to enhance fleet readiness. “We used an aggressive strategy to have a ‘get real’ date and a ‘get better’ date to return this vital asset back to the fleet,” stated Shipyard Commander Capt. Michael Oberdorf. He added that the team’s urgent and purposeful approach enabled the project’s completion ahead of schedule.

Submarine Squadron Two, based at the shipyard, supported the project’s efforts. “Texas represents a shining example of resilience and readiness, returning to the fight tougher and stronger than ever,” said Capt. Jason Deichler, Commodore of Submarine Squadron Two. He praised the team’s innovation, teamwork, and determination in overcoming challenges to deliver exceptional results.

Commanding Officer Cmdr. Chad Ingle expressed pride in his crew and the project team. “Serving as Commanding Officer of Texas is an honour and a privilege,” he said. “The depot modernisation period has been challenging, and the last six months of testing have been extremely tough. The reward for the crew’s hard work is returning a fully repaired and modernised battle-ready submarine to the fleet.”

Attack submarines like the USS Texas play a crucial role in the U.S. Navy’s maritime strategy. These multi-mission platforms support sea control, power projection, forward presence, maritime security, and deterrence. They excel in various operations, including anti-submarine warfare, strike missions with tomahawk cruise missiles, special operations, and intelligence gathering.

A Depot Modernisation Period is a critical maintenance phase in which submarines undergo major overhauls, repairs, and system replacements while in dry dock. During this period, vessels are upgraded to enhance their warfighting capabilities, ensuring they remain prepared for future challenges.
