The XM919 IAM programme aims to replace the US Army’s current range of grenade launchers, including the M72 LAW, M136, AT-4, and M141 models. The new design is expected to be a lightweight, single-use launcher capable of engaging a wide array of targets. A key feature of the XM919 is its ability to be fired from confined spaces, enhancing its versatility in various combat scenarios. In addition to live munitions, Saab will also supply training grenades, designated XM922, along with stationary training equipment.
Saab’s proposal, which features the latest generation of the AT4 launcher, the AT4CS TW, was selected over bids from Nammo and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems. While this is a significant achievement for Saab in the US market, where it already supplies a range of multifunctional grenade launchers such as the Carl-Gustaf, as well as radar systems and artillery, the contract may face potential delays due to possible appeals to the US Government Accountability Office (GAO).
The contract is structured as a firm-fixed-price agreement, with specific production lots to be ordered through individual executive contracts. Initial funding was not released at the time of signing, and work locations will be determined with each order. The Army Contracting Command, Newark, New Jersey, will oversee the contracting activities for this project.
