The move is presented as another remedy for the difficult situation on the front line, following the transition to a corps structure that began in the spring. Two days later, the General Staff clarified that this did not involve changes to the Airborne Assault Forces, but rather the placement of existing assault regiments and assault subunits in brigades under specialised command.
The Assault Forces are to be employed in breaking through enemy defences and securing the entry of main forces into combat. They will not, however, participate in defensive operations.
According to the announcement, the creation of this new type of troops will formalise a trend observed for more than a year and now intensifying, whereby the best subunits are deployed as a kind of fire brigade. This structure will allow their transfer to the most threatened sections of the front without regard to permanent subordination.
