ZVS Holding launches new production line for artillery ammunition bodies

By Defence Industry Europe

ZVS Holding has inaugurated a new production line for the production of 155-millimetre artillery ammunition bodies at its facility in Snina, eastern Slovakia. The ceremony, held on 4 October 2024, was attended by Pavol Čahoj, Chairman of the Board of ZVS Holding, and Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák. This new line is part of a major investment aimed at increasing the production of large-calibre ammunition bodies to meet rising global demand.

The investment in the new production line amounts to EUR 31.5 million, bringing the total investment at the Snina facility to over EUR 80 million. The facility is equipped with modern technologies, including advanced robotics and automation, and has undergone significant infrastructure upgrades. The expanded capacity will enable the production of up to 360,000 units of 155mm artillery ammunition bodies annually by 2026.

In his remarks, Pavol Čahoj emphasised that the expansion is a response to the growing demand for large-calibre ammunition bodies due to the current geopolitical climate. “This investment strengthens our position in the market and supports the strategic priorities of the EU and NATO in defence,” he said.

The new production line is also expected to create dozens of highly qualified jobs in the Snina region, with ZVS Holding aiming to more than double its workforce. Since 2020, the company’s employee numbers have risen from 75 to 180, and the expansion is seen as a significant boost for the local economy.

Slovak Defence Minister Robert Kaliňák praised the development, highlighting the importance of a strong national defence industry for both Slovakia and European security. He confirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the sector.

Additionally, MSM Group, in partnership with Czechoslovak Group (CSG), has invested EUR 50 million in the ZVS facility and its operations, further boosting its capabilities. ZVS Holding is one of Europe’s leaders in the production and life-cycle management of large-calibre ammunition bodies, with operations extending to Spain and Serbia.

ZVS holding was established in 1990 as a state-owned enterprise. In 1996 the company was transformed into a joint stock company with 100% state participation and in 2015 the Slovak holding MSM GROUP became a 50% shareholder. The other 50% remained in the hands of the state. The production plants of ZVS holding are located in Dubnica nad Váhom and Snina. The main activities of ZVS holding include the production of artillery ammunition from the standard one to ammunition with extended range up to 40 kilometers, bodies for 155mm caliber shells, mortar ammunition of 81mm to 120mm caliber and production of pyrotechnic components.
