The ARC ILMS is designed to measure and analyse ice loads encountered by ships operating in ice-covered waters. It provides real-time feedback to operators, ensuring safe navigation and optimising vessel performance in harsh Arctic conditions.
This contract follows Aker Arctic’s recent successful deliveries of the ARC ILMS to the Canadian Coast Guard’s Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPV) and French cruise operator Ponant, where the system monitored ice loads on Le Commandant Charcot during its historic trans-Arctic voyage. The Finnish Navy’s selection further strengthens Aker Arctic’s position as a leader in ice-navigation technology.
Aker Arctic has been closely involved in the Pohjanmaa-class programme, contributing to its ice-operability solutions. In addition to the ARC ILMS, the company is supplying ice-strengthened controllable pitch propellers, pitch control mechanisms, propeller shafts, bearings, and shaft seals for the corvettes.
Beyond system design and material supply, Aker Arctic is also responsible for installation supervision and commissioning of the vessels’ propulsion systems. The partnership underscores Aker Arctic’s expertise in developing cutting-edge ice-navigation solutions for military and commercial fleets operating in extreme Arctic environments.
