The primary role of these laser systems is to counter airborne targets, particularly unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) such as the Shahed drones. However, no details have been disclosed regarding the effectiveness, technical specifications, or specific type of laser weaponry in use.
Laser-based weaponry is intended as a response to large-scale Russian aerial attacks on Ukrainian territory. A key advantage of these systems is their low cost per shot, which could provide a favourable cost-effectiveness ratio against more expensive aerial threats.
In December 2024, Colonel Sucharevskyi previously reported that Ukraine possessed laser weaponry, specifically mentioning the “Tryzub” system. This system was described as capable of engaging aerial targets at distances exceeding two kilometres.
It remains unclear whether the Tryzub system is the result of independent development by Ukraine’s defence industry or if it incorporates expertise from international partners.
