Danish CV90 infantry fighting vehicles upgraded with Saab Barracuda Mobile Camouflage System

By Defence Industry Europe

The Danish Army has begun equipping its CV90 infantry fighting vehicles with the advanced Barracuda Mobile Camouflage System (MCS) from Swedish defence company Saab. This upgrade enhances the vehicles’ ability to remain undetected in combat, improving both soldier safety and operational effectiveness.

Soldiers from the Guard Hussar Regiment in Slagelse have been fitting the camouflage system onto their CV90s for the first time. The atmosphere in the maintenance garage is positive, with troops expressing satisfaction over the system’s design and its alignment with their operational needs.

According to Senior Sergeant Flemming Ahrenkiel from the Danish Ministry of Defence’s Protection and Camouflage Department, concealment plays a crucial role in battlefield survival. Modern threats require camouflage that not only hides vehicles from the naked eye but also reduces their visibility to enemy sensors and surveillance systems.

The Saab Barracuda MCS provides advanced multispectral protection, reducing a vehicle’s detectability across multiple wavelengths, including visual, infrared, and radar signatures. This system is particularly effective against modern reconnaissance technologies, enhancing the survivability of military assets.

Denmark’s collaboration with Saab Barracuda has been longstanding, built on mutual trust and understanding. Ahrenkiel emphasised that Saab’s deep knowledge of Nordic terrain conditions ensures their camouflage systems are optimised for Denmark’s operational environments.

Over time, camouflage requirements have evolved alongside changing global security conditions. While past missions demanded desert-adapted concealment, today’s focus is on systems suited for forested landscapes, a challenge Saab’s expertise is well suited to address.

With the camouflage now installed, Danish soldiers are eager to test it in real field conditions. Initial impressions in the garage are promising, and expectations are high as the CV90 vehicles prepare for deployment in operational environments.
