The European Commission and Japanese officials have held the first EU-Japan Defence Industry Dialogue to advance cooperation between their defence sectors. The meeting took place on 17 April and forms part of the EU-Japan Competitiveness Alliance established at the July 2025 summit.

The dialogue was attended by European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius and Japan’s State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Toshio Ino. The event also included a video message from Masahisa Miyazaki and participation from officials of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Ministry of Defence.

Representatives from EU institutions, including the Commission’s Directorates-General DEFIS, GROW and TRADE, as well as the European External Action Service, also took part. The dialogue brought together defence industries and associations from both sides to discuss cooperation in a changing security environment.

Participants reaffirmed that the initiative supports implementation of the EU-Japan Competitiveness Alliance. The framework is intended to enhance joint competitiveness and enable coordinated engagement in international discussions.

Both sides agreed that strengthening the defence industrial base is a shared priority. They highlighted the importance of reinforcing security through partnerships in response to increasing global challenges.

The discussions emphasised the need to improve resilience in defence supply chains, including in dual-use sectors. Participants confirmed their intention to continue exchanging views to advance cooperation on defence industrial matters.

The dialogue was launched by the Aerospace, Security and Defence Industries Association of Europe and the Society of Japanese Aerospace Companies. It is intended to serve as a platform for collaboration on defence industry issues, including advanced and dual-use technologies.

Both sides also welcomed plans to sign a memorandum of cooperation between the two industry associations. The agreement is expected to further support joint activities and strengthen ties between European and Japanese defence industries.
