U.S. Navy selects L3Harris VAMPIRE counter-drone weapons to strengthen littoral defences against unmanned attacks at sea

The U.S. Navy has selected L3Harris Technologies to deliver VAMPIRE counter-drone systems for littoral defense. The weapons will support a growing U.S. counter-unmanned systems architecture.

VAMPIRE is a self-contained reconnaissance and precision-strike system. It is designed to engage drones and remotely piloted platforms across several operating domains.

“VAMPIRE is a flexible and effective system that meets the unique requirements of the U.S. Navy for littoral C-UxS defense,” said Tony Calderon, president of Targeting & Sensor Systems within L3Harris’ Communications & Spectrum Dominance business. “We’re engineering new capabilities to adapt to our customers’ missions and ruggedizing VAMPIRE against the environmental stresses of maritime environments.”

L3Harris is modifying the system for coastal and maritime conditions. The company did not disclose the order value, delivery schedule or number of systems.

The Navy selection follows a separate U.S. Army order for VAMPIRE. The two programs extend the system’s use across land and naval forces.

L3Harris is also delivering Wraith Shield software for layered counter-drone operations. The software uses military radios as sensors to help defeat small unmanned aircraft.

Wraith Shield can be integrated with VAMPIRE and Drone Guardian. The combined systems give operators several options for detecting and engaging unmanned threats.
