Airbus secures contract to define France’s future maritime patrol aircraft

By Defence Industry Europe

The French Defence Procurement Agency (Direction Générale de l'Armement) has awarded Airbus Defence and Space a contract to conduct a risk-assessment study for France’s future maritime patrol aircraft. The 24-month contract, signed in partnership with Thales, builds on the initial feasibility study launched in late 2022.

This study aims to refine the technical, economic, and industrial conditions necessary for the programme’s development. It will also guide system integration decisions and conduct initial wind-tunnel tests to assess the aircraft’s aerodynamic performance.

Jean-Brice Dumont, Executive Vice President of Airbus Defence and Space, highlighted the strategic value of the A321 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA). “The A321 MPA has all the assets to become a true flying frigate capable of responding to the wide range of missions entrusted to the French maritime patrol,” he stated.

The A321 MPA is a militarised version of the Airbus A321XLR, specifically designed for anti-submarine and anti-ship warfare. It will serve as a replacement for the French Navy’s Atlantique 2 aircraft, which currently operates from the Lann-Bihoué naval air base.

Equipped with a full suite of advanced sensors provided by Thales, the aircraft will feature next-generation radar, sonar systems, electronic and electro-optical warfare capabilities, and magnetic anomaly detection. It will also carry a comprehensive communication system, including satellite links, and be armed with torpedoes and the future anti-ship missile (FMAN).

The aircraft’s design will offer long-range endurance, high manoeuvrability, and adaptability to both low and high-intensity operations. Its large cargo bay and open mission system architecture ensure future upgrades to counter evolving threats.

Leveraging the proven success of the A320 family, the A321 MPA benefits from high availability, reliability, and low maintenance costs. With over 10,000 A320 aircraft in service worldwide, Airbus provides a well-established support network for long-term operational sustainability.

Airbus Defence and Space has extensive experience in military aircraft conversions, having successfully developed the A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) and integrated mission systems on platforms such as the P-3 Orion, C295, and CN235. The new contract marks a significant step in defining France’s next-generation maritime patrol capabilities ahead of the programme’s expected launch in 2026.
