The U.S. Army has selected Westinghouse’s eVinci microreactor for the next phase of the Janus Program, its initiative to bring advanced nuclear power to defense installations. The decision advances the heat-pipe reactor for further work under a program focused on secure and resilient energy for military missions.

Westinghouse said eVinci is designed to provide electricity around the clock for eight years without refueling. The company is positioning the system as a flexible source of long-duration power for defense applications.

The Janus Program is supported by the Department of War Innovation Unit and is intended to accelerate microreactor technology from development toward commercial hardware. The Army views reliable on-site energy as a requirement for mission assurance, operational readiness and national security.

“Reliable energy is fundamental to mission assurance, operational readiness and national security,” said Rich Rademacher, President of Westinghouse Government Services. “The selection of the eVinci microreactor for the Janus Project highlights the important role advanced nuclear technology can play in providing resilient, long-duration power to the warfighter.”

Vendors selected for the program are expected to be paired with one of nine military installations currently under consideration for microreactor technology. The selection process assessed their technical, financial and organizational capabilities through a panel comprising dozens of experts from across the country.

“The Janus Program is about transitioning from designs and experiments to reliable commercial hardware which secures our energy independence,” said Dr. Jeff Waksman, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment. “We look forward to working alongside each team as they proceed toward successfully completing the rigorous technical milestones we’ve agreed upon.”
