BAE Systems has opened a new 150,000-square-foot addition to its campus in Endicott, New York, aimed at expanding development and manufacturing capabilities for high-voltage energy storage systems. The company said the facility will support hybrid and all-electric aircraft and ground vehicle programs while increasing production capacity for advanced propulsion technologies.

The expansion project, first announced last year, is focused on the development of energy storage systems designed for electrified air and land platforms. According to the company, the new building strengthens its ability to combine propulsion expertise with advanced aviation technologies.

“This expansion strengthens our ability to meet growing global demand for aircraft and ground vehicle electrification,” said Jack Stevens, vice president and general manager of Controls and Avionics Solutions at BAE Systems. “Additionally, it creates new opportunities for growth and collaboration across the Greater Binghamton community, reinforcing our commitment to the talented workforce in this region.”

BAE Systems said the facility will accelerate the delivery of technologies intended to support more efficient and lower-emission flight operations. The company added that the expansion significantly enhances its advanced manufacturing capacity and field support operations.

The upgraded site includes a new engineering laboratory and fully automated high-volume manufacturing capabilities. The facility also contains dedicated workspace for the company’s Horizon Solutions Aftermarket Services and Support team, which provides commercial aircraft support services.

According to BAE Systems, employees at the Endicott campus develop technologies for commercial and military air and land applications, including flight controls, engine controls, mission systems and power and propulsion solutions. The company said the expansion is intended to support future growth in electrification and advanced aerospace systems.

Chuck Schumer described the facility opening as an important development for the regional battery manufacturing sector. “Today’s exciting expansion is a significant milestone for the Southern Tier as we celebrate BAE Systems adding another loop on America’s battery belt,” Schumer said.

“This $65 million, 130-job expansion will bring to life a new battery production line, research lab, and office space,” he added. “BAE Systems has a world-class workforce making the finest electronic systems produced anywhere in the country.”

Schumer said the new production line would help strengthen domestic battery supply chains and support future growth in the battery manufacturing sector in upstate New York. “This new production line will help bring the battery supply chain back from overseas, supercharging the Southern Tier’s leadership in battery manufacturing and building the future of the battery industry in upstate New York,” he said.

“I’ve fought to secure tens of millions of dollars in investment to grow the battery industry in upstate New York, and I will keep fighting to ensure the next breakthroughs in battery technology are made here in upstate New York,” Schumer added.
