Bundeswehr to receive first IRIS-T SLM unit this summer

By Defence Industry Europe

The German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) are poised to receive their first fully operational fire unit of the IRIS-T SLM air defence system this summer, as announced by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) on social media. This delivery marks the first unit of its kind under a contract signed in June 2023.

Defence Industry Europe reported that the German defence procurement agency (BAAINBw) had previously inked a deal with Diehl Defence for six fire units of the IRIS-T SLM, a medium-range ground-based air defence system. The system is adept at neutralizing threats from enemy aircraft, helicopters, missiles, and drones within a range of up to 40 km and an altitude of up to 20 km.

Notably, the IRIS-T SLM system has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in operational use in Ukraine, achieving a 100% hit rate against waves of over 12 targets, as per customer reports.

Diehl Defence, the system house, acts as the system integrator for IRIS-T SLM and supplies the missile launcher and guided missiles. The system also incorporates the TRML-4D multi-functional radar provided by HENSOLDT and the Integrated Battle Management Software Fire Control (IBMS-FC) for the command post, developed by Airbus.
