Cohort’s ELAC secures EUR 16.4 million contract amendment for Italian Navy submarine sonar

By Defence Industry Europe

British defence group Cohort has announced that its German subsidiary, ELAC Sonar GmbH (ELAC), has secured a EUR 16.4 million contract amendment to supply another sonar system for the Italian Navy. The amendment follows the activation of a contractual option as part of the Italian Navy's new-build submarine programme.

Under this agreement, ELAC will provide the sonar system for an additional submarine, adding to the systems already under production. The amended contract increases the total value of the agreement, originally awarded in 2021, to over EUR 100 million and now covers sonar systems for four submarines.

Andy Thomis, Chief Executive of Cohort, emphasised the significance of the order, stating: “This important order is another significant win for ELAC and demonstrates its ability to meet the demanding specifications of the Italian Navy.” He highlighted the cutting-edge nature of ELAC’s Sphere digital hydroacoustic technology, which offers a generational leap in underwater battlespace performance.

ELAC’s Sphere sonar technology is regarded as one of the most advanced systems available globally. It enhances the Navy’s capability to detect, classify, and track underwater threats, aligning with the Italian Navy’s high-performance requirements.

Thomis also pointed out that this contract, alongside other recent successes for ELAC and Cohort, reinforces the visibility of the Group’s future revenues. The continued delivery of advanced sonar solutions underlines ELAC’s standing as a leader in underwater acoustic technology and its importance within Cohort’s portfolio.
