Czech Republic and Germany sign agreement for joint procurement of Leopard 2A8 tanks

By Defence Industry Europe

On June 24, the Czech Ministry of Defence signed an agreement with Germany to jointly purchase Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks.

Joining the German framework agreement enables the Czech Republic to acquire modern main battle tanks under the same conditions as the German army. The final unit price will depend on the number of tanks purchased as part of the overall transaction. A joint order facilitates and accelerates procedures, and due to the manufacturer’s discount for purchasing a larger batch of tanks, significant savings can be achieved.

The cost of acquiring the first 61 units, along with accompanying packages (simulators, workshop sets, training), is estimated at 39.8 billion CZK. The anticipated cost of purchasing all 77 tanks is 52.1 billion CZK.

The Prague government promises the involvement of Czech companies in the development, production, and maintenance of the Leopard 2A8 tanks operated in the Czech Republic. This includes providing warranty and post-warranty service.

The order for German tanks is planned to coincide with the completion of negotiations on the transfer of technology to Czech companies. An industrial cooperation agreement with the manufacturer is to be signed no later than the same day as the main contract for the purchase of vehicles. This is expected to occur by the end of this year.
