Czech Republic signs €1.34 billion contract for Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks with delivery from 2028

By Defence Industry Europe

The Czech Republic has signed a contract worth about €1.34 billion for 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks, with an option for 14 more. The agreement was concluded between the Czech Ministry of Defence, the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment (BAAINBw) and manufacturer KNDS Deutschland, with deliveries starting in 2028.

A separate contract was signed with KNDS for “bohemisation,” which covers national adaptations such as communication systems, camouflage, markings, machine guns and ammunition for trials. This part of the deal is valued at CZK 1.49 billion including VAT.

“Tanks are an essential part of a heavy brigade. By joining the agreement to acquire the most modern Leopard 2A8 vehicles, we are not only fulfilling our commitment to our allies in the North Atlantic Alliance, but above all we are addressing a debt to our own defence capability,” said Defence Minister Jana Černochová.

The Leopard 2A8 tanks will come with service and logistical support, including spare parts, training, documentation and management systems. Czech forces are due to receive the first tanks in 2028, with deliveries continuing until 2031.

The Ministry of Defence also plans to buy up to 19 additional Leopard vehicles in engineering, recovery, bridge-laying and driver training versions. These will be purchased through separate contracts once German negotiations with suppliers are completed.

“Tanks still have their undeniable place on the modern battlefield and are an essential part of a modern army. The quality of the Leopard 2A8 – from firepower to crew protection and technological sophistication – will ensure that the Army of the Czech Republic gains a first-class tool for the defence of the state,” said Chief of the General Staff Karel Řehka.

The Czech Republic becomes the third country to join Germany’s Leopard 2A8 procurement programme, after Germany and the Netherlands. The joint approach lowers costs, shortens administrative procedures and secures production capacity.

An industrial cooperation deal with KNDS will involve at least eleven Czech companies in the supply chain, both for tanks destined for the Czech Army and for other customers. The current value of this cooperation is CZK 1.9 billion (€75 million), with further growth expected.

The Leopard 2 family is already in service in 15 European countries. According to KNDS, the A8 variant is now being established as the new production standard and a symbol of European interoperability and standardisation.
