Lubor Koudelka, Senior Director of the ministry’s Armament and Acquisition Division, signed the agreement for the government, with Rheinmetall represented by Björn Bernhard, Managing Director of its Vehicle Systems Division, and Jan Sames, Senior Vice President for Service. “Zapewnienie wsparcia serwisowego jest absolutnie niezbędnym krokiem w eksploatacji czołgów,” Koudelka said, adding: “Dzięki przezbrojeniu czeskich czołgistów w Leopardy 2A4 czeskie wojska lądowe uwalnia się od rozwiązań sowieckich i rosyjskich.”
A parallel agreement sets out Rheinmetall’s cooperation with the Czech defence industry during the contract’s execution. State-owned VOP CZ will be the main partner, with staff training on higher-level Leopard 2A4 maintenance starting this autumn and later participation in servicing at the 73rd Tank Battalion in Přáslavice.
Lieutenant General Miroslav Hlaváč, First Deputy Chief of the General Staff, said: “Umowa serwisowa zapewni czeskiemu wojsku naprawy i serwis czołgów Leopard 2A4 przez siedem następnych lat,” noting it would “zapewni płynne przeniesienie możliwości serwisowych od dostawcy czołgów do czeskich oddziałów logistycznych, bez ograniczania szkoleń czy eksploatacji sprzętu.”
The Czech Army operates Leopard 2A4 tanks with the 73rd Tank Battalion of the 7th Mechanised Brigade. It is set to have 42 tanks, 28 from Germany under the “Ringtausch” exchange and the rest purchased in December 2024, plus two Bergepanzer 3 recovery vehicles.
VOP CZ Director Vlastimil Navrátil told CZ Defence: “Przeprowadzono długą serię skomplikowanych negocjacji” and welcomed that “doprowadzono je do szczęśliwego końca.” He said “Kluczowe jest, aby przedsiębiorstwo państwowe uczestniczyło w tak istotnym przedsięwzięciu, jak serwisowanie czołgów,” because “Czechy zyskają w ten sposób cenne know-how i pełną kontrolę nad jego wykorzystaniem.”
