Denmark has signed a 500 million euro contract with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for the acquisition of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System. The agreement will equip Denmark with what the company describes as the most modern and advanced air defence capability available.

“With this procurement Denmark will significantly enhance the country’s operational capabilities and the ability to effectively combat modern air threats, and furthermore strengthen the overall NASAMS air defence presence in the Nordic region,” said Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. The company confirmed that the NASAMS system includes Raytheon’s radar, advanced missile variants, Kongsberg’s Fire Distribution Center and multi-missile launchers.

The system can operate several missile types beyond the AMRAAM, including the AMRAAM Extended Range and AIM 9X Sidewinder. These options provide both long-range and short-range coverage. “The Danish selection underscores NASAMS’ position as the world leading mobile medium range integrated air defence solution for NATO allies,” says Kjetil R. Myhra, Executive Vice President of Division Defence Systems in Kongsberg.

Kongsberg states that NASAMS’ modular design and open architecture allow continuous upgrades throughout its lifetime. This is intended to ensure adaptability to new threats, support a wide range of missions and provide scope for long-range and anti tactical ballistic missile capabilities.

With this decision Denmark becomes the fourteenth NASAMS user nation. It is also the eighth NATO member to adopt the system.
