EM&E Group drives indirect fire accuracy with ALKON 122, ALKON 122L, and EGM120

Accuracy is now a key element in indirect fire operations. The ability to hit a target with fewer rounds not only increases mission effectiveness, but can also help reduce ammunition consumption and the associated logistical burden.

To this end, EM&E Group has developed a range of guided munition solutions aimed at increasing the capabilities of different types of munitions by incorporating advanced navigation and trajectory correction technologies. These include ALKON 122, ALKON 122L and EGM120, three solutions aimed at providing greater precision and new possibilities of use.

 

Improve the performance of existing ammunition

The ALKON family is based on a clear principle: incorporating guidance capabilities into conventional munitions allows them to be more effective without the need to develop a completely new weapon system.

For 122 mm rockets, EM&E Group has developed ALKON 122, a universal guidance kit designed to be integrated into standard ammunition of this caliber, 122 mm (Type 9M22U). The system combines GNSS navigation with advanced sensors, a guidance algorithm and an active aerodynamic control section capable of correcting the projectile’s trajectory during flight.

This configuration allows a CEP of less than 15 meters to be achieved, improving the accuracy of conventional 122 mm ammunition.

The incorporation of guidance capabilities into an existing ammunition also allows its possibilities of use to be expanded. In this sense, ALKON can be used by tactical units or SOF and allows missions to be carried out such as hitting different targets from the same point or acting against hardened targets through repeated hits.

ALKON 122L: an additional guidance capability

The environments in which guided munition operates can present challenges for satellite navigation systems. To respond to these conditions, EM&E Group has created ALKON 122L, an evolution of ALKON 122 incorporating a semi-active laser seeker.

The system combines GNSS navigation, a tactical-grade inertial measurement unit, and a semi-active laser finder, providing a dual-guided configuration.

Thanks to this combination, the ALKON 122L achieves a CEP of less than 5 meters. The semi-active laser finder also provides additional guidance capability, allowing the system to be used in scenarios where the GNSS signal may be compromised.

Both variants thus offer different guidance configurations for 122 mm ammunition, adapted to different operating conditions.

 

EGM120: precision guided for 120 mm mortar systems

EM&E Group has also transferred its guided munition capabilities to the mortar field using EGM120 (Escribano Guided Munition), a 120 mm guided mortar grenade designed to maximize operational efficiency, being a simple solution that stands out for its speed of preparation and its total compatibility with EM&E Group’s EMOC folding mortar.

EGM120 combines GNSS navigation and inertial sensors to provide guidance and trajectory correction. In addition, the system achieves a CEP of less than 10 meters.

Mission data can be configured using the ALKON Mission Control System, while the fuze can be set to different modes depending on the mission requirements, including PD, PDD and miss-distance GNSS. Self-destruct or safe mode options can also be incorporated as mission data.

EGM120 incorporates HE explosive charge and can be used with six or seven propellant increments. When used with an EM&E mortar, it reaches a maximum of 7,000 meters in ballistic mode and 7,400 meters in guided mode.

Among its main features, EM&E Group highlights its correctability, reduced set-up time and ease of use. Its benefits include the reduction of collateral damage, a smaller logistical footprint and accuracy from the first shot.

 

A family of solutions for precision indirect fire

ALKON 122, ALKON 122L, and EGM120 apply guidance technologies to different types of ammunition, from 122 mm rockets to 120 mm mortar systems.

While ALKON 122 uses GNSS navigation, sensors, a guidance algorithm and aerodynamic control to correct the trajectory, ALKON 122L adds a semi-active laser finder and a tactical-grade inertial measurement unit. EGM120, on the other hand, combines GNSS and inertial sensors to provide guidance and correction in mortar ammunition

With these solutions, EM&E Group showcases three key parts of its guided munitions portfolio, offering capabilities aimed at increasing the accuracy of indirect fire and providing new possibilities of use for different units and systems.
