European Patrol Corvette European Defence Fund project: launch of first phase

Source: European Commission (DG DEFIS)

This initial phase of the project, with a focus on conceptual studies up to the initial design of a Modular and Multirole Patrol Corvette (MMPC), has a EUR 60 million backing from the European Defence Fund (EDF) in the form of grants

The participating Member States will contribute the remaining EUR 27 million to make up a total budget of EUR 87 million.

The project “European Patrol Corvette” (EPC), launched in the context of PESCO, will focus on conceptual studies up to the initial design, and use as a reference corvette class vessel which can fulfil a wide range of missions in future contexts of operations. The produced design will be modular and flexible, more energy-efficient, greener, safer, more interoperable, and cyber-secured.

On 24 October 2023, the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) signed a contract with a consortium led by Naviris, encapsulating key naval players like Fincantieri (Italy), Naval Group (France), Navantia (Spain), along with beneficiaries from Greece, Denmark, and Norway.

OCCAR is now set to oversee the entire project scope, acting both as the Granting Authority, mandated by the European Commission, as well as the Contracting Authority, mandated by the Member States involved.
