This acquisition builds upon Slovenia’s initial order of one fire unit placed in January 2024. The newly procured units include radar systems, tactical operations centres, missile launchers, IRIS-T SLM guided missiles, and comprehensive logistic support.
Additional support elements, such as a mobile workshop, spare parts and reloading vehicles, are also part of the contract. Diehl Defence described the follow-up procurement as “a strong signal, not only for the outstanding performance of the system, but also for the excellent customer relationship between Diehl Defence and the Slovenian project team.”
The deal represents the first follow-up procurement within ESSI under the BAAINBw framework. Diehl Defence highlighted that procurements under ESSI “enable a faster procurement process as well as great synergy effects in the areas of training, maintenance and logistics in the future, from which ESSI customers will benefit.”
Currently, 24 nations participate in ESSI, aiming to enhance NATO interoperability and achieve efficiencies through joint procurements. The IRIS-T SLM system is designed to counter aerial threats such as aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones at ranges of up to 40 km and altitudes of up to 20 km.
The system features full 360-degree coverage, high tactical mobility, rapid deployment capability, and multi-target engagement with minimal personnel. Diehl Defence reported that “the air defence system IRIS-T SLM system convinces with its excellent performance in operational use in Ukraine,” achieving “a very high hit rate even during waves of attack with more than 15 targets,” according to the customer.
The IRIS-T product family now includes 21 user nations that have acquired either the IRIS-T air-to-air missile or one of Diehl Defence’s ground-based air defence systems. This demonstrates continued international confidence in the system’s operational effectiveness.
