Finnish Air Force demonstrates take-off and landing from the highway [VIDEO]

By Defence Industry Europe

The Finnish Air Force (Ilmavoimat) recently carried out Exercise Kesäbaana 23, showcasing their ability to perform highway operations for rapid aircraft deployment. The exercise took place in Tikkakoski, north of Jyväskylä, where a closed road section was repurposed as a temporary runway.

Pilots and aircraft from various regions participated in this training scenario. The unique highway used for the exercise features a dedicated reserve runway positioned within its four lanes, allowing pilots to simulate takeoffs and landings. This innovative approach ensures readiness for potential situations where road bases might be required.

All Finnish pilots undergo comprehensive training in operating from road bases. This enables the air fleet’s quick deployment across the country, if necessary. As part of the exercise, Ilmavoimat shared a video demonstrating a pilot’s perspective during takeoff from the newly constructed highway.
