First flight of Belgium’s MQ-9B SkyGuardian unmanned aircraft completed

The Belgian Air Force has announced the successful maiden flight of its first MQ-9B SkyGuardian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), conducted by General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI) on 20 February. The test flight took place in California, with Belgian operators expected to begin training once their programme is completed.

Belgium is set to receive its first MQ-9B SkyGuardian this summer, with the aircraft configured exclusively for reconnaissance missions. It will be equipped with electro-optical targeting systems and AN/APY-8 Lynx radar to enhance surveillance capabilities.

The acquisition is part of a contract signed in August 2020 through the U.S. Department of Defense, covering the delivery of four MQ-9B SkyGuardian UAVs and two ground control stations. The package also includes spare parts and essential ground support equipment.

These UAVs will replace the retired IAI RQ-5 Hunter drones and are expected to integrate with Belgium’s existing fleet, including the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II. Belgium joins the United Kingdom and Poland as European operators of the MQ-9B, with Poland purchasing three units in December 2024.
