Germany and the United Kingdom have jointly signed a contract worth over €450 million to acquire new M3 amphibious bridging and ferry systems from General Dynamics European Land Systems–Bridge Systems (GDELS) in Kaiserslautern. The agreement, finalised through the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), marks a major step in the bi-national Wide Wet Gap Crossing (WWGC) programme.

The WWGC revives close defence collaboration between the two leading European NATO nations, who last received M3 vehicles in 1999. The new systems will significantly improve mobility and deployment capabilities in both combat and disaster response operations.

The upgraded M3, based on the M3S variant used in Sweden, features enhanced functionality, a modern human-machine interface, increased reliability and safety, and reduced through-life support costs. It also enables full interoperability and interchangeability with existing M3 users and the SRB/FSB/IRB pontoon bridge systems.

The M3 system remains NATO’s fastest available amphibious bridge and ferry, capable of transporting even the heaviest main battle tanks across wide water gaps. Its rapid readiness and proven performance in varied climates make it a critical asset for modern battlefield mobility.

“The new M3 will provide Germany and the UK with much anticipated, state-of-the-art floating-bridge capabilities enabling unhindered maneuverability for all NATO vehicles. More than 90% of all NATO amphibious bridging capabilities are supplied by GDELS,” stated Dr. Thomas Kauffmann, Vice President and Chief Sales Officer of GDELS.

“We are proud to continuously deliver the M3 out of our Kaiserslautern sites, where we currently are substantially investing into additional production capabilities in line with GDELS’ German growth strategy 24/500,” said Dr. Christian Kauth, Vice President and Managing Director of GDELS Bridge Systems.

“The acquisition confirms GDELS’ leading position as a powerhouse for land defense in Europe and underlines the unwavering commitment of GDELS towards its European customers,” concluded Antonio Bueno, President of GDELS.
