Germany orders 120 PAC-3 MSE interceptors for Patriot air and missile defence system

By Defence Industry Europe

The German Armed Forces have placed an order for 120 PAC-3 MSE guided missiles for the Patriot air defence system through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. The German Bundestag’s Budget Committee approved the necessary funding of EUR 763.5 million on 18 December 2024.

The FMS programme allows recipient countries to procure military equipment and services through the US government under the same conditions as the US Armed Forces. In this case, Lockheed Martin has been contracted as the primary supplier of the missiles.

To secure an earlier delivery slot, the German government has made an advance payment covering the full contract value. The import VAT will be paid upon delivery, with the contract cost of EUR 641.6 million covered by the Bundeswehr’s special fund and the VAT of EUR 121.9 million financed through the defence budget.

Germany is scheduled to receive 75 missiles in 2028 and the remaining 45 in 2029. Additionally, two missiles will remain in the United States for potential lot verification, with delivery to Germany possible after a minimum of five years if not required for testing.
