GMV takes leading role in 2024 European Defence Fund with six project participations

By Defence Industry Europe

GMV, the multinational technology and defence systems company, has been selected to participate in six projects under the 2024 European Defence Fund (EDF). This participation strengthens GMV’s position as a major contributor to the European Union’s strategic and technological autonomy.

GMV will coordinate two of the six projects – PRECISE and MYRIAD – making it the company leading the highest number of projects in this edition of the EDF. This leadership reflects GMV’s continued commitment to innovation in the defence sector.

The PRECISE project, led by GMV, will develop a solution aimed at improving the ability of European armed forces to anticipate and mitigate the impact of military operations on civilian infrastructure. The tool will support safer and more accurate planning in complex environments.

The MYRIAD project, also coordinated by GMV, focuses on the development of systems for detecting, identifying and characterising relevant information from satellite images using combined optical and radar data. The project is intended to enhance strategic surveillance and improve defence decision-making capabilities.

In addition to its leadership roles, GMV will contribute to four other EDF initiatives: CITADEL Range, FASETT2, NINJA2, and iMUGS2. These projects span areas such as cyber defence training environments, tactical cargo aircraft design, intelligent ammunition systems for GNSS-denied environments, and autonomous unmanned systems with swarming capabilities.

GMV’s participation in these six initiatives further consolidates its prominent position in the European Defence Fund programmes. The company has been involved in 42 projects under both the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) and the EDF, leading five of them.

“GMV’s vision is focused on leading the development of advanced technological solutions that respond to today’s challenges and make Europe better prepared to successfully address its strategic needs in the future,” the company stated.

Defence continues to be a key growth area for GMV, with the firm increasing its workforce by 50% in the past five years to more than 3,500 employees. This expansion underlines GMV’s role in advancing a more integrated, autonomous, and interoperable European defence industry.

The European Defence Fund supports collaborative innovation among EU Member States in defence technology and capability development. The 2024 funding round will support 62 new projects with nearly €1 billion in investment, bringing the EU’s total investment to over €4 billion since the programme’s inception in 2021.
