Ukraine’s HIMERA and Denmark’s GomSpace have begun operating OBRIA NANO, a test satellite for a planned independent Ukrainian communications network. The mission is assessing technologies that will inform the design of the proposed OBRIA constellation.

The satellite launched on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission on 1 October 2026. The partners said testing was progressing according to plan and that the spacecraft would operate under Ukrainian control.

“It is an opportunity to lay the foundation for an independent communications network for Ukraine,” said Misha Rudominski, HIMERA’s co-founder and chief executive officer. “We are starting by testing technologies in orbit, while our long-term goal is to develop capabilities that will strengthen the country’s strategic security and reduce dependence on external communications providers.”

The project aims to give Ukraine more communications options and reduce its reliance on foreign technology. The partners said dependence on providers in other countries, including allies, creates strategic risks, particularly during wartime.

“We are excited to work with HIMERA and accelerate this important initiative,” said Carsten Drachmann, GomSpace’s chief executive officer. “Our shared ambition is to strengthen Ukraine’s independent communications capabilities and support the country’s long-term security and economic development.”

The longer-term plan is to deploy a satellite network providing coverage across Ukraine and complementing European networks. Localising production of satellites and ground communications terminals in Ukraine is a planned next step, intended to build domestic expertise and manufacturing capacity.
