HENSOLDT expands radar production with new anechoic chamber

By Defence Industry Europe

The German defence technology company HENSOLDT has announced a significant investment in its radar production capabilities. A new anechoic chamber dedicated to testing SPEXER radars has been put into operation at the company's Ulm site, with an investment exceeding one million euros.

The SPEXER radar family provides advanced surveillance capabilities, enabling the automatic detection and classification of ground, sea, and low-flying air targets. One of its key models, the SPEXER 2000, has been integrated into the Skyranger 30 air defence vehicle developed by Rheinmetall Air Defence.

HENSOLDT’s radar technology is also used in several German defence programmes, including cUAS Feldlager (ASUL), qualified air defence, and HoWiSM, which focuses on high-energy laser solutions for countering drones. The SPEXER radars also play a role in the ‘Near and Very Short Range Air Defence System’ (NNbS), further enhancing Germany’s air defence capabilities.

The new anechoic chamber will enable more precise measurement of Active Electronically Scanning Array (AESA) antennas, which is a highly complex aspect of radar technology. Fully automated data acquisition and analysis will improve both near-field and far-field antenna measurements, increasing efficiency in the production process.

HENSOLDT’s Head of Production, Gregor Schwab, emphasised the importance of expanding production in response to global security developments. By shifting to series production, the company aims to more than triple the output of its SPEXER radars over the next three years, ensuring faster and larger-scale delivery of critical defence technology.
