By Defence Industry Europe

On 13 March, the United States Department of Defense announced a new agreement with Lockheed Martin to expand the production and procurement of AGM-158B JASSM-ER cruise missiles and AGM-158C LRASM anti-ship missiles. The contract, valued at USD 1.9 billion, is set to run until mid-2029.

Under the agreement, Lockheed Martin will supply an undisclosed number of missiles to both the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy. Upon signing, the Pentagon authorised an initial payment of USD 1.4 billion to commence production.

The contract includes additional AGM-158B JASSM-ER missiles as part of the 22nd production lot and the launch of the 23rd lot. It also covers the 9th and 10th production lots of AGM-158C LRASM missiles, ensuring continued supply to the US military.

Both missile types are considered critical assets for American air power in early 2024. Their advanced technology enables them to engage surface targets from a safe distance, enhancing operational effectiveness and survivability.

Ongoing integration efforts are increasing the number of platforms capable of deploying these missiles. This development not only strengthens US military capabilities but also improves prospects for future export success.
