The H225M helicopters are part of a larger modernisation effort aimed at replacing the ageing Mil Mi-17 helicopters. The new fleet is equipped with advanced communication systems, sophisticated avionics, and the HForce weapon system, which enables the use of a wide range of armaments. “In the interest of the Hungarian people’s security, it is essential for us to develop our defence capabilities and procure modern equipment. The new, high-tech assets will strengthen the airlift, airdrop, and special operations capabilities of the Hungarian Defence Forces,” stated Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
The H225M deliveries began in July 2023, with the initial plan aiming for all 16 helicopters to be delivered by the end of 2024. However, potential delays in the schedule have not been ruled out. The procurement also aligns with Hungary’s broader air force modernisation programme, which includes the introduction of 20 H145M helicopters, although one has been lost, and the integration of Embraer C-390 Millennium medium transport aircraft.
Hungary is the second NATO member to operate the H225M helicopters after France, with the Netherlands recently joining the list by ordering 12 units configured for special forces operations.
