By Defence Industry Europe

The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed two contracts worth approximately €770 million (₹6,900 crore) with Bharat Forge Limited and Tata Advanced Systems Limited. The agreements cover the procurement of 155mm/52 calibre Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) and High Mobility 6x6 Gun Towing Vehicles, respectively.

The contracts were signed on 26 March 2025 at South Block, New Delhi, in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh. With this signing, total capital procurement contracts by the Ministry for the financial year 2024–25 have reached approximately €15.6 billion (₹1.40 lakh crore).

The ATAGS will replace existing vintage and lower-calibre artillery systems in the Indian Army. This acquisition is intended to enhance the Army’s artillery capabilities and support its modernisation efforts.

The Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System has been developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with Bharat Forge as one of the production partners. During the ceremony, the Project Director of ATAGS from DRDO’s Armament Research and Development Establishment in Pune was felicitated for his role in the system’s development.

This marks the first major procurement of towed artillery guns from the Indian private sector by the Army. According to the Ministry, the project will contribute to the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem and aligns with the government’s Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
