BWX Technologies secures USD 2.1 billion contract for U.S. naval nuclear reactors

BWX Technologies, Inc. has announced new contracts worth approximately USD 2.1 billion for the manufacture of reactor components for the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme. The agreements will support the construction of Columbia and Virginia-class submarines as well as Ford-class aircraft carriers.

 

The manufacturing and material procurement work will be carried out at BWXT Nuclear Operations Group facilities in Lynchburg, Virginia; Barberton and Euclid, Ohio; and Mount Vernon, Indiana. The contract spans a seven-year period that began in 2023 and will ensure the steady supply of critical reactor components for the U.S. Navy.

Additionally, BWXT’s Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. in Erwin, Tennessee, is responsible for the production and delivery of fuel and related support activities. This fuel contract, valued at approximately $300 million, was awarded in October 2023, with work scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

 

 

 

 

Commenting on the contracts, Gary D. Camper, President of BWXT Nuclear Operations Group, emphasised the company’s longstanding partnership with the U.S. Navy. He highlighted BWXT’s expertise in naval nuclear power and its role in maintaining security and freedom across global waters.

BWXT has been a key supplier of nuclear propulsion systems for the U.S. Navy for over 70 years. The latest contracts reaffirm the company’s position as a leading provider of nuclear technology in defence applications.
