Indra secures nearly USD 200 million contract with U.S. Air Force to renew man-portable tactical navigation systems

By Defence Industry Europe

Indra Air Traffic Inc., the U.S.-based subsidiary of the Spanish defence technology group Indra, has secured a contract to renew the U.S. Air Force’s Man-Portable Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) systems. The project, valued at up to 198,360,000 US dollars, will run until 2032 and will involve the design, engineering, commissioning, technical maintenance, and potential upgrades of the systems.

The portable TACAN technology provides accurate and reliable navigation support for military and civilian aircraft, even in environments where GNSS and GPS signals are compromised. Designed for use in adverse conditions, the system is easily transportable by two warfighters and supports operations such as rapid unit deployments and recovery of services after natural disasters or attacks.

The design, engineering, manufacture, and assembly of the new TACAN systems will be carried out at Indra Air Traffic Inc.’s facilities in Overland Park, Kansas. This site, which specialises in air navigation aid systems, has been awarded the “Made in Kansas” seal of approval by the Kansas Department of Commerce.

“We work daily to develop efficient solutions that ensure the highest safety in complex environments. We’re honoured by the fact that the U.S. Air Force relies on Indra’s systems to secure its missions around the world,” said Bill Colligan, CEO of Indra Air Traffic Inc.

Javier Ruano, Director of ATM Development in the USA at Indra, highlighted the achievement, stating: “This contract, along with the one secured last year for the renewal of the Federal Aviation Administration’s ground-to-air communications system, represents a major success for our U.S. company and encourages us to strengthen our commitment to the American market, where we offer innovative solutions tailored to its needs.”

This latest contract consolidates Indra Air Traffic Inc.’s growing presence in the U.S. defence and civil aviation sectors, where it already provides advanced, highly reliable air traffic management solutions. The company serves major customers such as the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. Navy, and the U.S. Air Force, adhering to the highest quality standards.
