Japan receives approval for major AMRAAM air-to-air missile procurement

By Defence Industry Europe

The United States Department of State has approved Japan’s request to purchase up to 1,200 RTX AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air guided missiles. The deal, which includes spare parts, diagnostic tools, training, and logistical support, is valued at up to USD 3.6 billion, with RTX Corporation as the primary contractor if an agreement is signed.

The AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles are intended to equip Japan’s modernised Boeing F-15J Eagles and Lockheed Martin F-35A/B Lightning II multirole fighter aircraft. There is also potential for integration with the Mitsubishi F-2, further expanding the operational flexibility of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces.

The AIM-120 AMRAAM family has a longstanding track record, with over 12,000 missiles produced and approximately 5,000 launched, primarily during testing and training. The missiles have achieved over 13 confirmed air-to-air kills in combat and are actively deployed in conflict zones, including Ukraine, where they serve with NASAMS air defence systems and European-supplied F-16 aircraft.
