Javelin Joint Venture considers production opportunities in India

By Defence Industry Europe

The Javelin Joint Venture (JJV) is exploring potential co-assembly and co-production opportunities for the Javelin anti-tank weapon system in India. This process involves a competitive source selection to identify suitable Indian partners for collaboration.

As part of this initiative, JJV has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a Government of India enterprise specialising in weapon production and system integration. The agreement will allow JJV to assess the feasibility of manufacturing Javelin in India to meet future requirements of the Indian Ministry of Defence.

JJV Vice President and Lockheed Martin Javelin Programme Director, Dave Pantano, stated that discussions with potential Indian partners aim to establish long-term strategic partnerships. The goal is to enhance India’s defence capabilities through local industry involvement.

Andy Amaro, President of Javelin Joint Venture and Raytheon’s Javelin Programme Director, noted that increasing demand for Javelin presents an opportunity to support local defence manufacturing. The collaboration would provide India with a proven anti-armour weapon system while integrating domestic expertise.

The Javelin system is developed by JJV, a partnership between Raytheon (an RTX business) and Lockheed Martin. More than 55,000 Javelin missiles and 12,000 Command Launch Units have been produced, with 25 countries worldwide using the system.

The agreement with BDL is part of ongoing efforts to expand Javelin’s global production footprint while evaluating its potential role in India’s defence industry. Further discussions will determine the next steps in this process.
