The potential future deal includes the purchase of up to 218 FGM-148F Javelin missiles and 107 Lightweight Command Launch Units (LCUs), along with additional equipment and services, according to a statement from the DSCA. The total value of the approved package is estimated at $114 million.
The Javelin missile system, which has been effectively utilised in combat scenarios such as the conflict in Ukraine, is increasingly being sought after by European nations. Bulgaria joins countries like Croatia, the Czech Republic, Poland, and the Baltic states in acquiring this advanced weaponry to strengthen their defensive capabilities.
This acquisition follows a decision by Bulgaria’s National Assembly on August 8, 2024, which outlined plans to acquire basic combat equipment for the construction of battalion combat groups within a mechanised brigade. The acquisition will be carried out through three contracts: one for the purchase of Stryker armoured vehicles, another for artillery and small arms, and a subsequent contract for the acquisition of Javelin anti-tank guided missiles.
The Javelin weapon system is produced by the Javelin Joint Venture, a collaboration between US defence companies Lockheed Martin and RTX.
