KNDS Deutschland unveils tracked version of RCH 155 self-propelled howitzer, offers it to U.S. Army as M109 replacement

At the AUSA exhibition, KNDS Deutschland presented the RCH 155 Tracked artillery system, a German contender in the U.S. programme to replace the M109 self-propelled howitzer. The system combines the Boxer Tracked chassis, which debuted in 2022, with the unmanned Artillery Gun Module (AGM) mounting a 155 mm howitzer.

In this configuration, the combat weight remains below 45,000 kg, and the vehicle is powered by an engine producing approximately 1,100 to 1,200 hp, enabling road speeds up to 70 km/h. Like other variants of the RCH 155, the crew consists of two soldiers – a driver and a commander.

The AGM is equipped with a 155 mm gun featuring a 52-calibre barrel, fed by an automatic loader holding 30 rounds and 144 modular charge systems. Fuze setting is fully automated, and the rate of fire exceeds 8 rounds per minute.

Firing range depends on the ammunition type: up to 30 km with standard rounds, over 40 km with base-bleed rounds, and up to approximately 100 km with the latest ammunition types such as Vulcano, which exceeds 70 km. The system supports MRSI (Multiple Rounds Simultaneous Impact) fire mode with up to five projectiles.

According to the manufacturer, the howitzer can fire in all directions using six propellant charges without deploying stabilisers. The gun’s elevation angles range from -2.5° to 65°, and direct fire is supported by an optoelectronic module integrated into the remote-controlled weapon station on the AGM.

KNDS Deutschland states that the Boxer Tracked chassis provides the vehicle with sufficient stability for firing. This allows for indirect fire even while moving, although the gun itself lacks a stabiliser.

The fire control system enables firing at the precise moment the barrel aligns with the target while on the move. KNDS also offers 20-foot ammunition containers, each holding over 60 shells and 288 propellant charges, enough to resupply two RCH 155 systems.

Loading ammunition from the container to the howitzer is done using a crane arm integrated into the container. This capability supports efficient resupply operations in the field.
