Cosworth is well-known for its expertise in powertrain development, electronics, and alternative propulsion solutions across various industries, including automotive, marine, and aerospace sectors.
The initial focus of this partnership is centered around the Kraken Technology Group’s MANTA platform. The MANTA platform consists of a range of autonomous uncrewed surface and subsurface vessels, designed to address a growing range of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions and deployment capabilities. Working closely with Kraken, Cosworth will leverage its electric technology prowess to develop cutting-edge battery systems capable of powering Kraken’s maritime platforms in faster, more efficient, and disruptive ways.
Kraken has already demonstrated its expertise in electric propulsion. In 2018, the company achieved a milestone by successfully breaking the UIM Outright Maritime Electric Speed World Record, showcasing an average speed of 88.61 mph in a globally publicized event at Coniston. This accomplishment laid the foundation for the development and adaptation of racing technology for defence and security applications.
Mal Crease, Founder and CEO of Kraken Technology Group, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Cosworth, emphasizing the importance of their progressive approach and disruptive mindset in advancing Kraken’s electric powertrain aspirations.
Simon Dowson, Managing Director of High Performance Battery Systems at Cosworth, highlighted their extensive experience in developing high-performance batteries for over a decade. He sees the partnership with Kraken as an ideal opportunity to showcase their capabilities in boundary-pushing applications, especially in the development of advanced vessels.
Kraken Technology Group aims to revolutionize the maritime sector by drawing inspiration from cutting-edge technologies and industries. The team is focused on advancing various aspects of the sector, including the development and manufacture of advanced composite materials, prototype vessels, autonomous technologies, and advanced powering solutions. Ultimately, their goal is to deliver real-world advantages to the defence and security industries.
