The Hungarian Defence Forces have received an additional three Leopard 2A7 main battle tanks from the German defence manufacturer KNDS Deutschland. This latest delivery brings the total number of Leopard 2A7 tanks in the Hungarian land forces to 18, as confirmed by Hungarian Minister of Defence Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.

The initial batch of Leopard 2A7HU tanks was officially handed over in mid-December 2023, marking the beginning of Hungary’s enhanced armored capabilities. The procurement is part of a significant defence contract signed in December 2018 between Hungary and the German defence industry, valued at EUR 1.5 billion. This contract not only includes 44 Leopard 2A7 tanks but also 5 Leguan assault bridges, 5 Wisent 2 armored recovery vehicles, and 24 Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzers.

The contract for the Leopard 2A7 tanks alone is estimated to be worth approximately EUR 500 million. The Leopard 2A7 is renowned for its advanced technology, superior firepower, and enhanced protection, making it a formidable addition to Hungary’s military arsenal.

The Hungarian Ministry of Defence has outlined plans for the complete delivery of all 44 Leopard 2A7HU main battle tanks by 2025, ensuring a significant boost to the country’s defence capabilities. This acquisition underscores Hungary’s commitment to modernizing its military forces and enhancing its defensive and operational capacities.
