L3Harris completes first two-ship F-16C and F-16D flight tests of Viper Shield electronic warfare system at Edwards Air Force Base

L3Harris Technologies has completed two-ship flight testing of its Viper Shield electronic warfare system at Edwards Air Force Base, California. The campaign marked the first time F-16C and F-16D aircraft flew together with Viper Shield hardware.

The tests expanded the system’s evaluation across combat, training and multi-crew mission configurations. L3Harris said the work would reduce integration risk and support preparations for operational deliveries.

Test teams assessed Viper Shield’s ability to detect, identify and counter modern electromagnetic threats. They also evaluated its interoperability with F-16 avionics across several mission profiles.

“The two-ship flights with Viper Shield are another strong example that the system is performing as intended,” said Lauren Barnes, President, Spectrum Superiority, Communications & Spectrum Dominance, L3Harris. “Viper Shield is showing exceptional threat awareness and rapid reaction capability throughout the flight test campaign at Edwards.”

The F-16C allowed engineers to test the system with operational combat loads, sensors and electronic warfare profiles. The two-seat F-16D supported evaluation across a broader range of flight conditions and mission configurations.

Viper Shield is available as an internally integrated system or a self-contained pod. L3Harris said its compact design allows installation across a range of F-16 variants.

The software-defined architecture uses commercial off-the-shelf technology to reduce pod weight. It is also designed to simplify upgrades throughout the system’s operational life.

“The collaboration with Air Force pilots, engineers and the broader test community is instrumental,” said Barnes. “Their operational insight and disciplined approach put Viper Shield through its paces in realistic environments.”

L3Harris is preparing to move into full-rate production of 233 planned systems. Eight countries have selected Viper Shield, according to the company.

The active production line is intended to support additional international customers. L3Harris said its quality controls and supply chain are being prepared for large-scale manufacturing.

“Each successful test brings us closer to delivering Viper Shield operationally,” said Barnes. “Our team is already focused on the next phases of integration and full-rate production.”

“Operators are counting on this capability, and we are committed to delivering it with precision and urgency.” L3Harris did not provide a timetable for the start of operational deliveries.
