L3Harris secures USD 1 billion U.S. Navy contract for advanced communications systems

By Defence Industry Europe

L3Harris Technologies has received an indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity award from the U.S. Navy, worth up to USD 999 million, to provide U.S. and coalition forces with resilient communications technology.

Under the contract, L3Harris will supply its Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS) terminals. As one of two providers of the MIDS JTRS solution, the company will deliver this critical, software-defined Link 16 communication radio for use across air, ground, and maritime platforms.

“The current threat environment requires the United States and its coalition partners collaborating together, in real time, to stamp out adversarial aggression near ally and partner sovereign borders,” said Christopher E. Kubasik, Chair and CEO of L3Harris. “Our resilient technology ensures all users in these coalitions know where friendly forces are and what they are doing to inform a common operating picture and achieve mission success.”

The MIDS JTRS system operates on Link 16, a fully interoperable multi-domain network. This network provides assured communications, situational awareness, command and control, and targeting information to coalition forces globally, making it a vital tool for modern military operations.

L3Harris completed its acquisition of the Link 16 Tactical Data Links product line in January 2023. Beyond MIDS JTRS, the company offers a comprehensive range of communication devices and systems designed to enable Link 16 access from air, land, and sea platforms, with efforts underway to extend the capability to space-based assets.

This contract builds on L3Harris’s 24 years of delivering standardised communications interoperability solutions to all branches of the U.S. military and 57 allied nations.
