Latvia Signs €81 million deal for Spike anti-tank guided missiles

By Defence Industry Europe

On June 3, the Latvian Ministry of Defence signed a contract worth €81 million with the German company EuroSpike for the procurement of Spike anti-tank missile systems, ammunition, and supporting equipment. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening Latvia’s defence capabilities.

“The Spike anti-tank missile systems have proven their effectiveness and fully meet the operational requirements of the National Armed Forces,” said Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds. “In order to strengthen the combat capabilities of the regular units of the National Armed Forces and the National Guard, we will purchase additional systems to complement the existing stock of this weaponry,” he added.

Deliveries of the Spike missile systems are expected to begin in 2028. The contract includes a 30% local industry involvement, aligning with Latvia’s Defence Industry and Innovation Support Strategy.

This strategy prioritises the inclusion of a security of supply requirement in large defence procurement projects, aimed at promoting the development of the domestic defence industry. The contract with EuroSpike reflects this approach by ensuring local participation in the fulfilment of the agreement.

The Spike system, manufactured in Israel, is among the most advanced anti-tank missile systems globally. It features fourth and fifth generation electro-optical technology, offering high precision and the ability to destroy a variety of armoured targets, including main battle tanks.

A key advantage of the Spik” system is its built-in data link between the missile and launcher, allowing operators to remain hidden and out of enemy reach while retaining full control of the missile. This feature enhances both operator safety and mission effectiveness.

Latvia previously signed a contract with EuroSpike in 2018 for the purchase of these systems, initiating collaboration between the company and the Latvian defence industry. The new agreement builds upon this established partnership and supports further integration with local capabilities.
