The satellites will operate in low Earth orbit. They are designed to detect and track hypersonic weapons and other advanced missile threats.
Leidos will provide infrared sensors, onboard signal processing and mission support. Sierra Space will integrate the payloads into its satellite platforms.
“AMDT3 will build upon proven technologies to accelerate global missile defense capability,” said Cindy Gruensfelder, president of Leidos Defense. “Leidos has already demonstrated these technologies on orbit, and with Sierra Space, we will rapidly transition that proven capability into an operational missile defense constellation that will help protect the nation against advanced missile threats.”
The payloads will process tracking data directly aboard each satellite. Leidos said this approach would reduce latency and deliver information faster to military operators.
The company will also provide ground support equipment and operational expertise. Its work will include sustainment support throughout the program.
The selection expands Leidos’ role in the Space Development Agency’s tracking architecture. Four Leidos payloads have operated in orbit under Tranche 0 since 2023.
Leidos is also delivering 14 missile-warning and tracking sensors for Tranche 1. Tranche 2 includes 16 additional sensors and two dedicated missile-defense payloads.
The Tranche 3 satellites will expand global coverage and network resilience. The architecture will support homeland protection and theater operations.
Leidos said the award advances its NorthStar 2030 strategy. The company is expanding its position in space sensing, onboard processing and operational missile tracking.
