Several hundred SGT STOUT systems are already fielded, providing an established base for training, readiness and sustainment. The system was originally designed to counter larger Group 3 and above UAS, along with fixed-wing and rotary-wing threats.
The test demonstrated an expanded ability to engage smaller drone threats using the existing Mission Equipment Package. Leonardo DRS said the result was enabled by the system’s modular, open architecture.
“SGT STOUT was engineered from the start for modernization, so capability can evolve as the threat evolves,” said Aaron Hankins, senior vice president and general manager of the Leonardo DRS Land Systems business unit. “This event highlights an upgrade path that emphasizes speed, safety, cybersecurity-by-design, and operational interoperability.”
Leonardo DRS said SGT STOUT is designed for formation-based air defense, where sensing, cueing and engagement capabilities protect maneuver forces. The company said this approach differs from systems intended primarily for point defense.
The Mission Equipment Package uses platform-portable and modular interfaces that allow additional capabilities to be integrated without redesigning the entire system. Potential additions include passive detection options, AI-enabled decision aids, edge computing and new effectors.
Leonardo DRS said several proven technologies could be incorporated in the near term as enhancements to systems already in the field. Those additions could further improve SGT STOUT’s ability to counter Group 1 and Group 2 UAS threats.
The company is also applying experience from SGT STOUT and its prime role on the Mobile Low, Slow UAS Integrated Defeat System program. Leonardo DRS said those lessons are supporting development of modular, software-driven air-defense capabilities for changing customer requirements and future programs.
